One film camera – one theme – 6 participants – 24 pictures over 6 weeks…. at least that was the plan!

Pass the camera: Project 1 – Together

A dictionary will provide a range of definitions of ‘together’ but we wanted to give members of the community in and around Old Trafford a chance to make their own photographic interpretation. Naturally, we wanted to do this together, so we shared an easy-to-use film camera by passing it between us.

The project was organised in close collaboration with OT Creative Space. It started in October 2021 with the goal of finishing before Christmas. In the end, despite quickly collating a list of eager participants, it took over a year to complete. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the process of passing the camera around hit delays. Also, during the first attempt at the project, the camera was opened, exposing the film to light and ruining most of the shots. Trying again with a second roll of film, we think that the film was rewound part-way through, and reloaded. Initially believing that the shot counter was broken, we shot a few frames to finish the film off before realising that it had been rewound. However, as can happen with many art forms, we have some happy accidents, resulting in interesting images! Some frames of the first film survived, albeit with areas of redness caused by ‘light leaks’. Meanwhile, the double exposures from the second film could be argued to be another form of ‘togetherness’.

Thanks to all the participants who took part in this project.
