Ana Lucía Cuevas

Ana Lucía Cuevas grew up in Guatemala (Central America) during a 36 year-long civil war. She was forced into exile when she was 21, and travelled to Europe to continue with her Education. Initially she studied art in Bulgaria and, later on, studied filmmaking and communications in London and Manchester.

Since 1995, Lucía has worked as an independent producer, director and video editor in England, Honduras, Costa Rica and Guatemala. In 2006, in Manchester, she co-founded Armadillo Productions with cameraman Fred Coker.

As well as being a graphic artist and filmmaker, Ana Lucía is also a ceramicist. She started to explore this medium after having to be present at the exhumation of her sister-in-law, Rosario, and her family in Guatemala City in 2015.

This process left Lucía suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting, immediately after, in her having to undergo PTSD therapy. As part of her own search for healing, Lucía started to develop her work in clay modelling. Today she uses clay as the medium, not only to heal, but also to convey her feelings about her own experiences while living in Guatemala, and her life since being in exile. Her work also reflects on the lives of other Guatemalan women and communities seeking transitional justice in respect to what they suffered during the war.

  1. i’ve known Lucia for many years, but never had a lot of the blanks filled in. She’s an amazing woman. She’s a survivor and she cares about the people and places in her life and around the world. I love her as.”sister “
