A series of Paintings by Rachel Carroll

Hi, I’m Rachel. I’m a painter and community worker from Manchester. I’m a mum of 2 brilliant kids. I’ve been busy working and raising children and although I have always made art off and on in my life, I feel like I’m only at the start of my creative journey at 41-years-old!

I am passionate about the natural world and stories of all kinds. As a dyslexic person, stories and my imagination have always been my safe place and somewhere I retreated to when my school life was hard. I continue to use it as my therapy to this day. I’m also passionate about creating a fairer place for people of Manchester and work at a charity supporting young people leaving care.

I love creating paintings inspired by the natural world, stories and folklore as well as my internal world.  My art is about being honest, not perfect. I use watercolour and gouache but also like to play with different materials. A lot of my inspiration comes from folk art and old stories. I love letting my imagination wander — sometimes my paintings have a touch of the strange or the uncanny. Folklore helps me explore the hidden corners of life, turning familiar scenes into something a little mysterious or magical.

Being a mum and a woman shape so much of what I paint: real life, the hard bits and the hopeful ones. Making art helps me sort out my feelings and notice the good stuff, even on tough days. I hope anyone who sees my paintings feels welcome—like they can take a breath, find a bit of comfort, or even spot something a little odd that makes them pause and wonder.
