Textile Art by Sally Hirst

Sally is a socially engaged illustrator, textile artist and ceramicist based at Venture Arts and the Whitworth Art Gallery. With much of her work being inspired by the people around her.

Sally is particularly interested in social history and retelling the stories of ordinary people from the past. These have included Holocaust survivors, ‘witches’ and Victorian factory workers. She likes to link these stories to her own experiences, such as fostering refugees and living with a disability.

The bottom piece is inspired by William Dodd, a Victorian factory worker. The second one up is inspired by Scottish mythology and the two smaller weavings have been created as development pieces.
