Rosanna Antiszko

I think the best description of myself is a Mixed Media Folk Artist.

My dolls are inspired by Folklore and Folktales, The Changing of The Seasons, Plants, Flowers, Trees, The Sun, The Moon and much more.

I have always been fascinated by Folk Art from different cultures, though I hadn’t done much work inspired by my heritage until about a year ago. My father was Ukrainian and my mum was from Italy and I thought it was time to pay homage and respect to them and where they came from. Because after all they sparked my interest by telling me their wonderful tales. They were both fantastic story tellers.

One of my favourite stories that Mum shared with me came about quite by accident. At my Primary School, Friday afternoon would be story time. That’s where the teacher read to us from The Wind In The Willows. Part of the story is about a little baby otter who goes astray. He is found a little later, safe and sound at the feet of Pan. The description of Pan really captured my imagination. Well, as soon as the bell went for home time, I was so excited to tell my Mum about Pan and how he kept the little otter safe. It was the first time I had a story to share with her. As we walked home through Hullard Park she told me about the Green Man. She told me that he was the spirit who looked after all the plants, trees, flowers and animals. How he was a guardian and acted with lots of love and respect, and how important it was for us to do the same. I said, “Where is he?” and her reply was, “Everywhere! He has a beautiful face made up of leaves. You may catch a glimpse of him if you’re lucky! He could be hiding behind a tree, or blend in with the scenery. So make sure you respect what nature has given to us.” I would look for him everywhere. I’m 47 years old and still looking for him now.

For this collection I decided to explore the cultures of my parents and all the old stories they would share with me. From there I went on a voyage of discovery and found new stories and characters that I made my own.

I chose to work in felt because it’s so vibrant and versatile. I have had a real fondness for it as a material since I was as a little girl. One of the neighbours on our street taught me how to make a little felt heart stuffed with lavender. I loved the bright colour, the texture and the childlike quality it has.

I do hope my work kindles, in your imagination, the magic of these characters.”

I am currently accepting commissions for dolls and if you are interested in discussing your ideas please contact her via email at ro.antiszko@gmail.com.
